Abstract:
Anaerobic digestion is used to stabilize the biodegradable portion of the various wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludges. As the adjective "anaerobic" implies, this stabilization occurs in the absence of oxygen. Anaerobic digestion reduces the odors and bacteria levels in the sludge feed, leaving the stabilized sludge relatively inert. Stabilization also reduces the amount of solids present in the sludge, although the overall sludge volume remains unchanged unless the supernatant is removed. Anaerobic digestion is often the most economical stabilization option because this process can actually produce energy in the form of methane gas.

The purpose of this chapter is to serve as a resource for plant staff for increasing their knowledge and understanding of anaerobic digestion for treatment of biosolids. While this chapter focuses on operational guidance and troubleshooting information, it also includes a general discussion of digestion theory, such as information on available digestion process equipment and the common benefits and drawbacks that can affect the digestion process or its operation and maintenance.

Significant changes and additions in this updated edition of this text include information on digestion pretreatment technologies, advanced digestion processes, regulatory issues associated with anaerobic digestion, and an expanded section on gas cleaning technologies. The discussions of all technologies and equipment have been updated to reflect most recent developments.
