Abstract:
Wastewater Treatment Plants represent significant capital investments and operational costs for municipalities and industries. Increasingly stringent discharge standards, and the demands for higher treatment capacity caused by population growth, result in demands for further expansion of existing facilities. In many instances, the most cost effective approach to facility upgrade is not expansion, but process performance improvement. Even if some treatment units must be upgraded and/or expanded, the magnitude of the upgrade/expansion can be optimized with process performance improvements.
The purpose of this chapter is to present evaluation technologies to determine actual unit process capacities and to assess process bottlenecks, introducing process performance improvement options. The chapter focuses on a set of methodologies that have been successfully used to evaluate and achieve process performance improvements in wastewater treatment plants. Specific plant testing and evaluation methodologies that can be used to define plant capacity and assess plant optimization approaches are described.
This chapter has been completely rewritten. It outlines the steps of process performance improvement. An important relevant topic, flow meter accuracy, is discussed. Next, tools used to define the process performance of the existing facility are presented. They include hydraulic capacity analysis, tracer testing, and aeration system analysis. Embedded in the tools are approaches to improve process performance. A section then follows on chemical addition. Chemical selection steps are detailed in addition to examples of process performance improvements. Next, a section on bioaugmentation is presented. Appendices are included to fully explain flow meters and aeration system analysis and present a tracer case history.
