Abstract:
Preliminary treatment of wastewater includes screening, grit removal, odor control (where appropriate), and flow measurement. The removal of debris in the screening area and the removal of sand, rocks, gravel, and other inorganics in the grit removal system protect downstream treatment processes. Should the screening or grit removal equipment fail, other downstream treatment processes may also fail because of mechanical or process failures. Various screening and grit-removal systems exist to properly prepare influent wastewater for advanced treatment later in the plant.

It is important that operations and maintenance personnel follow safety guidelines specified by headworks equipment manufacturers and commonly practiced by the utility. This includes, but is not limited to, procedures describing appropriate equipment lockout, confined space entry, localized power interruption, and standby-rescue personnel implemented during maintenance activities. Operations personnel must familiarize themselves with and respect safe operations guidelines recommended by the equipment manufacturers and maintain a clean, well-ventilated, and well-lit environment to prevent accidents.

The chapter has been revised and expanded. Revisions include more description on the commonly used equipment and systems and the important operation and maintenance aspects in keeping those systems in good working order. The chapter has been expanded to include equipment and systems, such as vortex grit chambers and screening presses, that are currently used in the practice of treating raw wastewater that were not included in the last version. The chapter serves as a practical guide to understanding the important operating and maintenance issues and concerns related to good operations, maintenance, and management practices of preliminary treatment systems.
