Abstract:
|
|
The electrical distribution system has three major functions. First, the system transfers power from the transmission system to the distribution system. Second, the system reduces the voltage to a value suitable for connection to local loads. Lastly, the electrical distribution system protects the entire network by isolating electrical faults.
This chapter first provides basic terminology and concepts followed by a discussion of typical electrical distribution systems as well as typical distribution system components. Basic maintenance and troubleshooting are also covered.
Relay coordination and harmonics are covered in the next two sections. Staffing and training and high voltage safety are also discussed. Related topics such as utility metering/billing, energy cost reduction, energy audits, and power factor correction are also presented in this chapter. Cogeneration, which is being used at many wastewater facilities, is also covered in this chapter.
Finally, because material and use terminology normally not used by a treatment plant operator is presented herein, a glossary of terms to assist the reader appears at the end of this chapter. The chapter has been restyled to increase readability and selected references have been updated. |
