Abstract:
Pumps and their related drives (that is, electric motors and auxiliary engines) are among the most important pieces of machinery the operator uses. Operations of the wastewater treatment process units and the collection system can become secondary if the wastewater cannot be delivered to the wastewater treatment plant or transported among the various process units. Therefore, every operator needs a basic understanding of pumping equipment and how it works.
The pumps most commonly used for pumping raw and processed wastewater include centrifugal pumps, air lift pumps, pneumatic air injectors, and a limited number of plunger pumps. Pump types commonly used for sludge include centrifugal with recessed impellers, positive displacement, rotary positive displacement, rotary lobe, diaphragm, and sludge grinding. Screw lift pumps are also used to pump raw wastewater, but only in larger facilities because of high purchase cost and sophisticated operational requirements.
This chapter provides a brief review of pump and pumping fundamentals, presents operations and maintenance (O&M) guidance for liquid and solids pumping, and discusses pumping station considerations. It has been updated to reduce the repetitiveness of previous O&M sections. Now, general O&M considerations (applicable to all pumps) are presented first, and more specific O&M practices are outlined under each type of pumping system. Also, the O&M sections address improvements in pump-driver and -control technologies and include more information on computerized O&M systems.
