Abstract:
Stabilization lagoons and land treatment processes are natural systems that are commonly used to treat municipal wastewater of small communities with populations of less than 20 000. Stabilization lagoons typically provide secondary treatment; land treatment systems often provide higher levels of treatment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protections Agency's (U.S. EPA's) Report to Congress, Municipal Wastewater Lagoon Study, and its 1988 Needs Survey Report to Congress: Assessment of needed Publicly Owned Wastewater Treatment Facilities in the United States, more than 5 500 lagoons and 1 225 land treatment systems are operated in the U.S.

This chapter provides information that will enable the operator of lagoons and land treatment systems to prevent problems, solve those that occur, and improve the performance of these natural systems.
